Almost 50 years ago, Elder LeGrand Richards called a New Vernon Stake Presidency consisting of President Ron Burnam with President Kim and President Ivins as his counselors. Included are pictures of this First Presidency and the audience in the chapel and gym when creating the Stake! Back then there were enough Primary Children to form a choir!
From the words of Sister Shirley Burnham whose husband Ron was our first Stake President!
" Elder LeGrand Richards came to Vernon to turn our District into a Stake. Following the meeting where the Stake Presidency, High Council etc. were presented and sustained he and others came to our home for dinner. He was 89 years old so planned to have a nap before returning to the church to speak at a fireside.
After everyone else left Elder Richard’s asked if I would like to hear how he proposed to his wife. I eagerly responded. He then said “ I told her that the Lord has first place in my life and if you will take second place I would love you to have it.”
That comment confirmed for me that although my husband’s call from Vernon District President to become the Vernon Stake President would continue to take a lot of his time my second place position was absolutely secure.
