Vernon Stake History - Saturday's Warriors!

In 1980 the Vernon Stake asked Kathi Remington to prepare an event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She recommended producing Saturday’s

Warrior which would cost $3000. The council felt that would be too expensive but councilman C.Rempel offered to pay any shortfall.

The play was cast by a missionary who was returning home and planned to come back to direct the play. She was unable to return so Shirley Burnham was asked to direct it. One of her sons was cast as an actor and a daughter as a singer and another daughter as a dancer so she agreed. The main acting characters were from Kelowna and Vernon so there were rehearsals weekly in each city.

The choir was directed by Doug Salmon. It included singers from several wards. The dancers were also from several wards. A missionary couple assisted with sets and lighting etc.

We performed in the Vernon Recreation Center and twice in the Kelowna Community Theatre. We made money on the event. It was exciting and successful and enjoyed by all involved.

Bishop Godfrey of Penticton wrote, “ A special thanks for your patience with our ward. For most, it was the first time they have ever been part of a beautiful success in a cultural activity.”

( Kathi and I each lost 10 pounds as producer and director)

Submitted by Shirley Burnham (Vernon 2nd ward)
