International Women’s Day, officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, celebrates women’s and girls’ achievements and raises awareness of the work that remains undone to ensure women’s equal participation in society. The Canadian government marks the day as one of “unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action” (“International Women’s Day,” canada.ca).
